Brown Hall
Brown Hall was constructed in 1960 and is named for Paul Brown, a 1929 graduate of the University.
This building once housed the Red Carpet inn, a cafeteria for students, a post office and the student
financial aid office. Today it houses the University Bookstore and mail center.
DeHuguley Physical Plant
This building is named for Clyde DeHuguley, a specialist in shoe repairing and leather craft.
Constructed in 1973, the physical plant is now housed here..
Garrett House
The Garrett House is named for Frances Garrett, a member of the class of 1920 and one of the first females to graduate from A&T. She willed the house to A&T to begin an endowment for the college. The Garrett house constructed in 1939 was once the Practice Cottage for students in home economics. It now houses the University’s Media Relations office.
Gear-Up
The pre-college initiative program at A&T is called Gear-Up (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs). This building, originally named the Register was once the home of the A&T
Register, the student newspaper. Gear - Up moved into the house in 2000.
Memorial Student Union
Constructed in 1967, the Memorial Student Union is the main center for social life of students at
the University. It houses meeting rooms, conference rooms, student government offices and staff
offices. The Union underwent an extensive expansion that included the additions of a food court,
an outdoor quad and a ballroom. The ballroom is named for Vernell Stallings, an alumnus and former
associate director of the Union. The food court was fittingly named the “Aggie Sit-In’ following a
contest that was held in colorful murals depicting life at A&T grace the walls. The grand opening of
the renovated Union was March 2001.
Murphy Hall
Named for one of the former legislators in North Carolina, Murphy Hall was once a dining hall.
Constructed in 1924, it now houses the Office of Student Affairs, counseling, testing and placement
advisory services.
SEBASTIAN Health Center
The infirmary constructed in 1953 was named for Dr. J. H. Sebastian, a former faculty member and one of the
first physicians to serve students on the campus of A&T. Reverence Jesse Jackson, distinguished alumnus,
was a student of Dr. Sebastian’s.
Ward Hall
This building constructed in 1955 was named for Roscoe Ward, a 1915 graduate of the College. The University
once produced its own ice cream and prepared its own milk products in Ward Hall. Ward Hall is now the home
of the University Police and Public Safety Administration.
Williams Cafeteria
This building constructed in 1974 was named for Frederick Allen Williams, a member of the class of 1931 and a
former faculty member and economist. Williams Cafeteria was completely renovated in 2002. In addition to
student dining, the Chancellor’s dining room, a faculty and staff dining room and two branded food areas are
located in Williams Cafeteria.
