Course Related Instruction

Course related library instruction is designed to introduce students to library research strategies and the basic information sources available for a particular class or subject. The librarian works with the classroom instructor and develops an instructional session or sessions to meet the specific needs of the class. Course related library instruction is one of the most effective ways of teaching students to use library materials and resources. The success is due to the fact they supplement subject-oriented training received in the classroom with instruction in information resources and search techniques.

The components of a course related instruction class:
- Overview of relevant library resources, both print and electronic
- Library search strategy using the online catalog and electronic databases
- Finding and locating books
- Finding and locating journal articles
- Finding Internet resources
- Critical evaluation of search tools and resources
- Specialized services and resources when appropriate, such as Alerting Services, Document Delivery, University Archival Resources, Government Documents, etc.
|
Guidelines for planning a course related library instruction session:
- The library will provide instruction at the library or at any location on campus.
- Library sessions for these classes should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance so that the librarian and instructor can consult and also so that the librarian can develop a subject guide. The beginning of a semester is usually very busy for the library instruction program, so it's always good to have an alternative date when scheduling a class.
- Instructional sessions are more effective if done in conjunction with a specific assignment that will give students the opportunity to integrate library research with course instruction.
- The involvement of faculty in the planning and teaching of a library session are critical to the success of library instruction. Students are more attentive when the instructor participates in the session.

Where does library instruction take place?
Classes are generally taught in the Seminar Room of the Library on the Second Floor (Room 258). If this room has already been reserved you will be notified of an alternate location. Classes can also be taught in classrooms or departmental labs that have suitable facilities for library instruction.
