In honor of National Poetry Month and National Library Week, students from Dr. Anjail Ahmad's creative writing course on the spoken word performed "Diary of a Mad College Student".

This frank performance, on April 12th in the library Seminar Room, covered the ills, trials and triumphs of life as a college student. The troupe drew enthusiastic applause as it revealed the tough truths of college through their poetic performance.

The ten A&T students shared emotional poetry. Creativity; confidence; uncertainty; ignorance and wisdom; shouting out and standing out; relationships; beauty; friends false and true; stereotypes; hard work; inspirations; challenges; and the Spirit of an HBCU were all given voice in this outstanding performance.

F.D. Bluford Library Awarded Federal Grant for Strengthening Academic Library Collections

The North Carolina A&T State University F.D. Bluford Library has been awarded a $20,000 grant to strengthen its Atmospheric Science & Meteorology collection.

The funds were awarded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Sciences under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), administered by the State Library of North Carolina. The institute invests federal funds in libraries to help them deliver relevant and up-to-date services for their communities.

The LSTA grant will be used to buy current titles to enhance and support curriculum holdings in the undergraduate Atmospheric Science and Meteorology track and the Ph.d Energy and Environmental Systems program, both of which are fast growing areas. Students will have access to current scientific information in this field allowing them to improve their knowledge and skill set to compete in this career field.

Bluford Library received one of the 112 competitive grants for fiscal year 2011-12 awarded to North Carolina libraries from this year’s federal allotment of $4,160,471. The LSTA grant program, administered by the State Library of North Carolina, funds projects across the state.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. Through the LSTA Grants to States program, IMLS provides funds to State Library agencies using a population-based formula. State libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services; they may also distribute the funds through competitive subgrants to public, academic, school, special and research libraries.

Library Student Advisory Council (LSAC) meets for the first time and generates many new ideas for the library.

Greensboro, N.C. January 19, 2012

F.D. Bluford Library hosted a meeting of its newly formed student advisory board, formally referred to as LSAC, Library Student Advisory Council. LSAC is a part of the vision of F.D. Bluford Library’s new dean, Vicki Coleman.

Upon joining the university last fall, Dean Coleman realized the importance of enlisting the aid of students in helping the library keep abreast of the ever-changing needs of our diverse student body. The LSAC, comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students, will assist in providing insight on our policies, services, procedures, our acquisitions, and on the overall effectiveness of the library as a vital component of N.C. A&T State University. At the first meeting held last October, the students were full of ideas regarding what worked well, in addition to areas that needed improvement. Other topics explored included computer use, security, technology, marketing, and most popular, refreshments in the library.

Students who wish to become a part of LSAC or who want to learn more about the organization can visit the library website, http://www.library.ncat.edu/advise or contact LSAC facilitator, Nastasha Johnson at 336.285.4185.
