Perhaps the most common format for citation in the Humanities is MLA style. Check the section "MLA style" on the MLA web site. http://www.mla.org
In the Social Sciences, most students and scholars use APA style. This method of citation is described in the most recent edition of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, which can be found in your library's reference room.
