Protocols and Domains

Let's look at some of the protocols (standards for transmission) on the Internet which are supported on the Web and can be accessed using URLs. HTTP is currently the most commonly used protocol, but you may see the following as well.

HyperText Transfer Protocol http:// Protocol used to transfer hypertext documents on the Web
File Transfer Protocol ftp:// Protocol for transferring files from one computer to another computer
Telnet telnet:// Protocol which allows user to login to another remote computer system
Gopher gopher:// Protocol which identifies a file on a gopher server
Newsgroup news:// Protocol for posting from Usenet newsgroup

Foreign countries and a few computer sites in the United States choose to identify themselves by their geographic locations, as opposed to identifying themselves as a business, organization or educational institution.

For example:

usUnited States
ukUnited Kingdom
caCanada
jpJapan
esSpain
frFrance
nyNew York

Domain names for the Internet, then, can be: com, edu, net, mil, gov, org, and the 2-letter abbreviation code for countries and states.

www.oxford.ac.uk

This URL translates into a World Wide Web site (www), at an institution identified as Oxford (Oxford University), an academic institution (ac), in the United Kingdom (uk).
