Atlases

Not only are there subject encyclopedias related to your research topic, there is even a specialized atlas. Road maps? Not exactly. While you may think of atlases only as containing maps and geographic information, many atlases contain historical, scientific or socioeconomic information in graphical form. The African-American atlas : Black history and culture--an illustrated reference includes maps, graphs, and reproductions of documents on the subject of slavery.

Atlases and collections of maps, can now be found on the Internet as libraries digitize their collections and make them available. One excellent resource is the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection maintained by the documents department at the University of Texas. It provides access to over 2000 public-domain maps which can be viewed, printed and downloaded. Among the collection are historical maps, world city maps, US federal agency maps and well as links to other map-related sites.
