LESSON 5 - Miscellaneous Resources
Directories
Another general reference source which you can consult for information related to your slavery topic (or any other topic) is the Encyclopedia of Associations. This is not really an encyclopedia in the usual sense, but a directory of organizations arranged by category and searchable by keyword indexing. Remember the index first strategy. It really is the most effective way to discover the number of organizations and associations related to Human Rights or Civil Rights and African Americans in particular. How many organizations related to Human Rights do you think there are? There are many US based organizations.
The important thing to learn about this source, is that there is an organization or association for almost every topic. Click here for examples of other directory type publications commonly found in reference collections.
You can also find directories of many types on the Internet. The most common are telephone directories and business directories, but there are directories of organizations as well.
