Consider which of the following categories of reference sources might provide useful information for your paper/project:

  1. Is there relevant information in an online encyclopedia such as Britannica Online? Or can you locate useful information in other encyclopedia sources?
  2. Is there a subject source or specialized encyclopedia in print and/or on the Internet for your subject?
  3. Does a specialized or scholarly journal include articles on your topic?
  4. Are there pertinent articles in current newspapers or general magazines?
  5. What people are important for your topic?
  6. Is a specialized atlas or collections of maps available?
  7. There may be one or more special interest associations related to your search. Have you looked in a directory online or in print?
  8. Will another type of directory help you?
  9. What source might provide a useful quotation?
  10. Are there relevant statistics online and/or in print?
