Consortium Agreement Results in $8 million Cost Avoidance for Bluford Library

F.D. Bluford Library's participation in the Carolina Consortium allows them to purchase materials for patrons at a lower rate.

In 2005 F.D. Bluford Library joined the Carolina Consortium, a group of libraries in North and South Carolina that collaborate to create deals and increase their purchasing power with publishers. The library sought to expand the materials available to faculty, students, and staff, and to stay within the library's budget through this partnership.

Today, because of the library's avid participation in the consortia, Bluford has a cost avoidance of 8 million dollars annually. F.D. Bluford Library takes part in 22 Carolina Consortium deals, ranking them 13th among the 190 member libraries in participation. This collaboration means N.C. A&T State University gains access to the most current and premiere content across the disciplines at a fraction of the cost; Carolina Consortium libraries receive an average of twelve dollars of content for each dollar spent.

Tiffany Russell, Associate Professor and Budget and Collections Administrator, notes, "With the changing landscape and tightening budgets this collective partnership allows the library to acquire resources that it would not have the capital to acquire otherwise and continue to work toward the preeminent mission of the University and library collectively." The library's collaboration means the Aggie community can find more of the resources they need, and that Bluford serves as an effective steward of their resources.
